Cuba Legalizes Sale, Purchase Of Homes

November 3, 2011

HAVANA (AP) — For the first time in a half-century, Cubans will be allowed to buy and sell real estate openly, bequeath property to relatives without restriction and avoid forfeiting their homes if they abandon the country.

How do you like that?  We move more toward socialism and Cuba begins a shift the other way.  For the rest of this AP story, go to:

Will the U.N. Apologize?

October 20, 2011

In the wake of the death of Colonel Gadhafi, the United Nations is being asked to apologize for “legitimizing” the Libyan tyrant with key posts. United Nations Watch, a particularly vigilant observer of the world body, is calling on the Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, and the U.N. human rights commissioner, Navi Pillay, to acknowledge that the U.N. “was wrong to support Gadhafi by granting him key posts on its most influential bodies.” Hillel Neuer, the executive director of United Nations Watch, says that the U.N. “should also apologize for choosing Gadafi’s regime to head the planning of its 2009 world conference on racism, and for designating Colonel Gaddafi’s daughter Ayesha a U.N. Goodwill Ambassador.”

Feds Probe Possible Arabic-Type Markings On Southwest Jets

September 22, 2011

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Federal agencies were working with Southwest Airlines on Thursday to determine who has been vandalizing their aircraft with mysterious markings.

KNX 1070 investigative reporter Charles Feldman has learned that since February, several Southwest jets have been vandalized with mysterious writings that show up on the underbelly of their 737 passenger aircraft.

The writings — which some have interpreted as being either Arabic or Arabic-type symbols — appeared to have been done with a chemical process that reveals the text once an auxiliary power unit is turned on and heats up the outside skin of the aircraft, according to Feldman.

While it remains unclear how many aircraft are involved, the trend has reportedly increased in recent weeks.

PLO Official: Palestinians, Israelis Must Be Totally Separated

September 15, 2011

Commenting on the subject of minority rights in the potential Palestinian state, PLO envoy to the U.S. says past experience shows the two people should be ‘totally separated.’

The future independent Palestinian state will not include a Jewish minority, a top Palestinian official told USA Today on Wednesday, adding that it was in the best interest of both peoples to “be separated.”

Maen Areikat, PLO Ambassador to the United States, made the comment just as the Palestinian Authority, led by President Mahmoud Abbas, was preparing to offer up Palestinian statehood to a vote in the United Nations General Assembly later this month.

Should the United Nations even consider admission to a “state” that in advance says will exercise bigoted discrimination?

Michigan to Track Kids’ BMI

September 15, 2011

Is it the job of the government to track the body mass index/weight of children or of any citizens?  Read this and we’ll talk about this tomorrow morning (Thursday 9/15) beginning at 10am on Newstalk 720, KDWN.

LANSING, Mich. (WLS) – In an attempt to combat Michigan’s childhood obesity epidemic, Gov. Rick Snyder announced Wednesday that the state would begin tracking kids’ body mass index through the Michigan Care Improvement Registry. Although the policy would be one of the most extensive government anti-childhood obesity efforts, pediatricians were divided over whether it would have the desired impact.

The tracking system would encourage pediatricians to calculate patients’ BMI using height and weight measurements, and report these numbers to the state through the existing immunization tracking system, the Michigan Care Improvement Registry. The numbers would be reported anonymously, meaning that the child’s identity would not be connected to his or her BMI in state records.

The hope is that having doctors track height and weight in this way would encourage more discussion among parents, kids and doctors about the dangers of being overweight, says Geralyn Lasher, director of communications at the Executive Office of the Governor.

Report: Group Of Columbia University Students To Dine With Iranian President

September 13, 2011

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A group of Columbia University students are expected to have dinner with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad next week in Midtown.

According to the Columbia Spectator, the school’s newspaper, as many as 15 members of the Columbia International Relations Council and Association were invited.

CIRCA vice president of academics, Tim Chan, told the paper the Sept. 21 meeting is still tentative and none of the members expressed any reservations about breaking bread with the controversial Iranian leader.

Should these students break bread with the man who has been compared to Hitler and has expressed a desire for the destruction of Israel and much of the western world?  We’ll talk about it on Newstalk 720 KDWN this morning at 10am. – Alan Stock

Wasserman Schultz: Republicans “Who Think The Recovery Act Didn’t Work Are Wrong”

September 6, 2011

Congresswoman Debbi Wasserman-Schultz things the recovery has worked and done the job it was intended to do.  Unemployment is officially at 9.1% which is much higher than it was when Obama took office (unofficially unemployment is anywhere between 18%-24%).  The congresswoman may think we’re out of the woods but I think she’s only paying attention to her own pocketbook.
